Half-Fast Philosophy...

"Amistades-Victorias-Cervezas" (translation:: "Friendship-Victory-Beer")

Half-Fast Velo was born out of the notion that amateur bike racing in the U.S. has become far too stodgy at times… Far too sponsored… Far too serious. We don't want to play that way. Just what is Half-Fast Velo serious about then? Find out more here

What's new...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 8.20.2010:
After building a mutually beneficial partnership over the last couple of seasons, Half Fast Velo is excited to announce the re-signing of Ninkasi Brewing as title sponsor of HFV for the 2011/2012 seasons! Stay tuned for additional news of this expanded partnership as part of Ninkasi's growth along with other sponsor updates as well!

(8/19/10) After a bit of the summer racing season lull, HFV hit the road and dirt in force this past weekend coming away with great results across the board in multiple State Championships! The weekend started with the OBRA Short Track MTB Championships where HFV medalled with David Rosen taking Silver and Brian Spears and Kevin Thompson finishing in the top 10 in the Cat 2 35-44 category while Donovan Grabowski stomped his way to another Championship medal this season with Bronze in the single speed category!

The short course on Saturday got HFV'ers primed for Sundays OBRA XC Championships. Wade Goff raced his single speed to a Silver medal in the Masters 30-39 category while David Rosen rode to a top 10 placing in the Cat 2 men category. Unfortunately the rest of HFV suffered mechanicals but didn't let that stop them from riding what they could of some of the best single track of the season.

Over on the paved side of things, David Hart didn't let the record temperatures keep him from taking home the Bronze medal in the Master 40-44 category!

(8/5/10) David Rosen used his good from the Portland MTB Short Track Series to make the podium with 2nd place in the binaural Westview Wildcats Short Track MTB race!

(7/15/10) Congrats to Donovan Grabowski on his Gold medal in the Kilo at the OBRA Track Championships this past weekend! All that track racing is going to have him flying come cross season!

Over on the dirt side of things, HFV'ers continued their pursuit of top 10's in the MTB Short Track series in multiple categories. Wade Goff made another push to his run at a top 10 overall in single speed category while Scott Ballard, David Rosen and Kevin Thompson battled it out in the Cat 2 35-44 and David Saltzberg represented again the Cat 1 35+ category.

(6/24/10) You would think HFV was just a mtb team from the looks of their results over the last month but what better way to prep for cyclocross?! Only thing better is short track mtb which kicked off this past Monday with the Portland MTB Short Track Series. Wade Goff built his killer new Papillon 29er single speed just before the race which he showcased by taking 9th place on the night! Scott Ballard showed he's coming into great form by taking 8th place in the Cat 2 35-44 field as well.

(6/17/10) Yet another mountain bike race debuted this past weekend with the Six Hours of Mount Hood XC endurance race. The challenge and festivities of an endurance race like this brought out every mtb'er on HFV and even a couple who hadn't ridden one in years! The Two Person Masters 80+ team of Kevin Thompson and Craig Austin made the podium with third place with David Rosen and Scott Ballard taking 5th place as well.

Steven Basden and Aric Rist finished in 5th place in the Two Person Single Speed category after the other SS team of Wade Goff and Paul Anderson who were running in 2nd suffered race ending mechanicals. Brian Spears and Saul Lopez who have not raced let alone ridden a mtb in quite some time proved they were up for the challenge by finishing in the top 10 in the Two Person Men category.

(6/10/10) Weekly series are heating up now that summer is right around the corner. Donovan Grabowski showed no signs of being rusty in his first track race of the season by sprinting his way to first place in the Masters Men 3k Pursuit as part of the Tuesday Masters Track Series!

(6/3/10) After weeks of wet weather and a crappy weather forecast for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, a bunch of HFV'ers headed to Sisters for the inaugural Sisters Stampede XC race. Warm and sunny skies greeted the racers on Saturday's pre-ride and a light but warm shower on race day only helped to improve one of the best courses of the season! Wade Goff led the way storming his way to 9th place in the stacked Single Speed field followed by Steven Basden who flatted twice but was able to finish the fun course in 22nd place. David Rosen landed in the points with a strong 15th place in the huge Cat 2 35-44 field.

(5/27/10) This past Sunday was the OBRA Team Time Trial Championships, one of the most fun yet toughest races of the year. HFV fielded four teams to take on the flat but treacherous course due to thunderstorms and even hail during their runs! The Masters 160-199 team of Robert Huff, Ian Penner Doug Palmer and Mark Magilner had the fastest time of the HFV teams taking home the Silver medal! The team of Paul Anderson, Dan Larson, Dan Silvernail and Craig Austin just missed out out on the podium taking 4th in the same category.

The Cat 3 team of Saul Lopes, Wade Goff, Kevin Thompson and Cameron Vander Stoep took 9th while the Cat 4 team of Steven Basden, Shawn McCloud, Shy Shyman and Scott Ballard came home in 11th place.

(5/20/10) The Silverton road races infamously brutal course lived up to expectations again this year. A few hearty HFV'ers toed the start line surviving to hang on and at least get some miles in and their annual pain threshold test...

(5/13/10) The focus this week was on the city of Bend who hosted road and mtb races starting on Saturday with the inaugural Bend Don't Break road race. David Rosen was the only HFV'er to double up and started Saturday with a strong place in the Cat 3's.

Sunday found David along with Wade Goff and Steven Basden at the Chainbreaker XC race which is one of HFV's favorite mtb races even if it means always missing Mother's Day (sorry mom!). Wade stomped his way to a strong 12th place finish in the stacked single speed category with Steven getting through mechanical issues to finish 20th. David overcame issues from his efforts on Saturday to finish 32nd in the Cat 2 35-44 group

(4/28/10) Late season snow on Mt. Hood gave way to sun this year for the Bear Springs XC race putting to rest the memories of racing through the snow in the 2009 edition! Dry trails for the first time in years greeted a record number of racers making for a fast and fun course. David Rosen led the way with 12th place in the Cat 2 35-44 group followed closely by Scott Ballard in 16th with David Saltzberg finishing in 22nd. Past experience didn't keep Steven Basden from lining up with the rest of the single speeds for the extra long Pro course surviving a very long day in the saddle taking 12th place on the day.

(4/21/10) With the early spring season in the books, HFV took advantage of a break in the schedule to get some "serious" training in with the annual Baker City team camp. The weekend routes mirrored the Elkhorn Stage Race and thankfully the weather was unseasonably nice providing for good times on the road. Thanks to Ninkasi Brewing for keep the team properly hydrated over the weekend. Thus what "happens at camp, stays at camp..."

with the infamous ascent of Dooley Mountain
but were they smiling after?

(4/15/10) Spring racing kicked into high gear this past weekend starting on Saturday with "Team Magilner's" favorite, the King's Valley road race. HFV showed up in force to help Mark Magilner take his 2nd straight win in the Masters 40+ category with the award of finally getting an honorary porta potty for future races and of course taxed with having to buy the team lunch yet again.

Sunday found the HFV dirt crew at Horning's Hideout for race #2 in the River City XC series after a break in the schedule. Kevin Thompson used his good road form to take 8th place in the Cat 2 35-44 category on a short but brutally hilly course followed by Scott Ballard in 17th place. Steven Basden flogged himself up the hills grinding his way to 12th place on the day in the single speed category while a couple other HFV'ers were less fortunate being taken out in first lap crashes but having a cooler of Ninkasi to help take away the pain.

(4/8/10) The PIR Tuesday and Hood River Crit series both kicked off this past week. David Saltzberg and David Hart headed east on Thursday to the Hood River crit mixing it up in 2 races with Salty finishing out the night with an 11th place in the 1/2/3 race. Not a bad workout!

(4/2/10) The Piece of Cake road race moved south again for this years addition where the new course suited Wade Goff who sprinted his way to 6th place in the Cat 3's. Eric Stouck continued racing well in the Cat 4's this spring by taking 5th place in the Masters 4/5 category.

(3/25/10) A break in the road calendar and gorgeous weather brought out a lot of racers to the final "As the Raven Flies Time Trial Series" race. Mark Magilner used the opportunity to not only better his time from the previous week but turn in one of the fastest on the day in taking the win in the Masters 40+ category. Craig Austin powered his way to 13th place in the Masters 40+ category as well.

(3/18/10) The Banana Belt road race series finished out for another year with strong rides by HFV. Mark Magilner made it into the right break in the Masters 40+ 1/2/3 working with 3 other ZteaM members to stay away and come home with a stellar 2nd place just missing out on the win. David Saltzberg finished out the series with another top 20 finish along with the rest of the HFV Masters 40+ 1/2/3 crew. Eric Stouck finished out a very solid series in the Masters 40+ 4/5 category with another top 10 finish that will have him upgraded soon!

Some guys just couldn't get enough asphalt and started the weekend with the Raven TT #2 on Saturday. Mark Magilner was the lone HFV'er representing well with a 2nd place in the Masters 40+ category.

(3/11/10) A busy weekend of racing started with the official start of the mountain bike season with the 2nd annual Echo Red to Red XC race. Word got out from last years race how great the course was along with clear and warm weather so a record 374 racers towed the line this year! Paul Anderson stepped up to the Cat 1 45+ long course after winning the Cat 2 race last year and came through in 8th place. David Rosen rode a great race on the shorter course in the Cat 2 35-44 group finishing in the top 10 again in 6th place along with Scott Ballard in his group while Steven Basden survived the long course on the single speed once again this year.

Sunday had the HFV boys on the road at Banana Belt #2 where the counter-clockwise direction seemed to favor David Saltzberg who rode a strong race to 11th place in the Masters 40+ 1/2/3 field while the rest of the HFV Masters coasted home and Wade Goff and Kevin Thompson mixed it up in the Cat 3 race.

As if the weekend wasn't busy enough, a few of the HFV who prefer flat roads over the rollers at the Banana Belt headed over to McMinnville to test themselves against the clock at the inaugural "As the Raven Flies Time Trial Series". Perennial powerhouse Doug Palmer showed improvement on his earlier TT form by finishing on the podium in the Masters 40+ category with Craig Austin taking 8th and Steve Truesdale placing in the points in the Masters 50+.

(3/4/10) The road season got into high gear with the start of Banana Belt road race series this past weekend. HFV fielded a few guys in the Masters 40+ 1/2/3 field where David Saltzberg showed his early season form with a 12th place finish with Ian Penner taking 14th. Unfortunately the Cat 3 squadro didn't fare as well with Saul Lopez being taken out in a first lap pile up coming out relatively unscathed after a quick trip to the ER. Heal quick Saul!

(2/25/10) The Jack Frost time trial kicked off the first race against the clock of the season and while the name would normally imply cold, frigid weather, El Nino' provided great racing conditions for the newly extended course. The promise of team sponsor "hydration" brought out a big group of HFV'ers to test their fitness in the early season led by Doug Palmer motoring his way to a 6th place finish in the Masters Men 40-49 group with Mark Magilner coming in close behind in 9th place rounding out the top 10.

(2/18/10) February signals the end of the winter hibernation and start of the racing season in Oregon. Punxsutawney Phil said there's 6 more weeks of winter but not here in Oregon where warm and dry weather greeted the masses that toed the line for the Cherry Pie road race this past weekend. The HFV roadies came out in force no matter where they were in their training program to test their fitness against the peloton Wade Goff rode a strong race in the Men Cat 3's to show he's on track with Kevin Thompson and Ian Penner finishing in the field as well. David Saltzberg pushed his way to a top 20 placing in the Men's 40+ category with Mark Magilner and the rest of the HFV 40+ racers successfully finishing out the first race of the year.

(1/7/10) Great article about Ninkasi's "Brewing Success" in last Sundays edition of the Eugene Register Guard newspaper. Exciting times for the company after all their hard work to get their brand known outside of Eugene. Thanks to Jamie Floyd of Ninkasi for the call out on the Half Fast Velo cycling team being part of their "grassroots marketing" efforts. Full article here
